Course content
Language of instruction is English.
This course provides students with a foundation for academic reading and writing in English and across disciplines/genres of texts related to English studies. It will focus on critical thinking, and evaluation of aspects of language, text structure, argumentation, rhetoric, and approaches within different areas of English as a field of study.

- have knowledge of fundamental aspects of academic writing in English
- have basic knowledge of citation and bibliographic techniques, and understand the importance of good citation practice
- understand differences between genres of texts within English studies

- can express themselves in English appropriate to the academic context
- can structure and revise an academic text in an effective way appropriate for its purpose
- can formulate a research question and outline for an academic essay
- can summarize, compare, and contrast the content of academic texts within one or more subdisciplines of English studies
- can use digital tools to locate and utilize appropriate academic materials
- can adopt a critical attitude to their own and others’ texts, and revise their own texts accordingly.

Learning methods and activities
A combination of lectures, seminars, group activity, and/or supervision. Students are required to use the course learning platform regularly.
Students should expect that this 7.5 credit course equates to approximately 10 hours of work per week, including teaching time.
Compulsory assignments
A collection of up to 3 written and/or oral assignments, equivalent to 1000-1500 words in total. Specific tasks will be defined at the start of the semester. Students with the MLSPRÅK program may be assigned a separate obligatory assignment.
Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.

About the assessment
The course is assessed by a portfolio examination of approximately 1500-2000 words in total, a significant proportion of which will be comprised of revised versions of compulsory assignments. Further details for the portfolio will be identified by the course coordinator at the start of the semester. The exam must be completed in English.

Recommended previous knowledge
Students should have knowledge of English equivalent to that of students who have learned English as a programme subject over two years at Norwegian "videregående skole".
