About the course

Course content

This course will offer an introduction to the history and culture of one or more English-speaking countries during a specific historical period. Emphasis will be on the making and/or remaking of the nation. The course will introduce students to some appropriate research methods either in the discipline of History, the social sciences, or cultural studies. The course will also provide students with an opportunity to study a range of non-fiction sources or texts.

A more detailed description of the academic content will be available in the reading list at the beginning of the semester.

Learning outcome

Candidates who have passed this course
- have basic knowledge of the history and culture of one or more English-speaking countries.
- can reflect on current political, social and cultural issues relating to one or more English-speaking countries from a historical perspective.
- have basic knowledge of the latest academic research on the history and culture of one or more English-speaking countries.
- have basic knowledge of the academic approaches and methods used either in the discipline of History, the social sciences, or cultural studies.
- can produce an independent piece of written work on one or more aspects of an English-speaking country.
- are able to demonstrate a good command of written English.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and/or seminars and/or supervision. Students are required to use the course learning platform regularly.
Approved obligatory assignment is valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).

Compulsory assignments

  • 1 skriftlig innlevering (ca. 1000-1500 ord)

The exam must be answered in English. Information about which dictionaries students are allowed to consult during the exam will be available in the reading list at the beginning of the semester.
