About

About the course

Course content

Students follow the teaching in a chosen ENG2000-level course, but take the exam identified by the course title ENG2900 Bachelor’s thesis in English instead of the regular exam in the elective course. The course contents will depend on which elective course the student chooses to write their Bachelor's thesis in. Students must be as familiar with the curriculum/reading material in the elective course as students who take the regular exam, but are required to develop an independent thesis topic in dialogue with the course teacher.

The Bachelor's thesis replaces the exam in the chosen ENG2000-level course.

All students must write an abstract of the thesis of approx. 1/2 page. The abstract will be written in both English and Norwegian and be placed first in the document, before the table of contents.

  • have the ability to focus on and formulate a defined research topic
  • can write an academic text in English
  • can analyse, organise and communicate their research findings
  • can use the theories, methodologies and discipline-related terminology expected of an independent work of scholarship

In addition, the learning outcome will overlap with that of the course that the student attends classes in.

Learning methods and activities

Learning methods and activities

Students must write the bachelor's thesis in connection with a ENG2000-level course that is taught in the same semester as they write the thesis.

Students enrolled in the programme Language studies with teacher education (MLSPRÅK) will normally write their thesis in their 6th semester (spring), and must therefore choose one of the courses taught in the spring semester. It is also possible to write in connection with ENG2153 in the 5th semester (autumn).

Students enrolled in the Bachelor programme in English (BENG) can choose whether they want to write their bachelor's thesis in the autumn semester or spring semester, and can choose between all ENG2000-level courses. Normally this will be either the 5th or 6th semester.

Compulsory assignments

Approved project proposal/outline with literature list for the Bachelor's thesis (approx. 500-600 words/1-2 pages). This replaces other obligatory assignments in the ENG2000-level course which the student attends classes in.

Further on evaluation

About the assessment:

The Bachelor's thesis replaces the exam in one of the courses at the ENG2000-level. The Bachelor's thesis must be an independent work (approx. 4000 words, excluding references and appendices), and when assessed it is expected that this work, written over the course of a semester, gives evidence of greater depth and breadth of knowledge in the subject-discipline than is expected for a home exam or another regular exam in the same subject, which is written over a more limited period of time.

Students must write the Bachelor's thesis in connection with an ENG2000-course taught in the semester in which the student is working on their thesis (fifth or sixth semester for BENG; sixth semester for MLSPRÅK). This also applies to students re-taking the Bachelor's thesis course. The thesis must be written in English.

Specific conditions

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to the bachelor's programme in English (BENG) or master's programme in Language Studies with Teacher Education (MLSPRÅK), specialization in English.

Course materials

Course materials

Students must be as familiar with the curriculum/reading material in the elective course as students who take the regular exam, but are required to develop an independent thesis topic and an additional reading list in dialogue with the course teacher.
