About the course
Course content
The course gives an introduction to basic structures of the English language and to aspects of English usage. The course covers topics such as basic grammatical terms and structures, vocabulary and lexical connections, differences and similarities between English and Norwegian, translation, discourse competence, text analysis, and other text production. Focus areas are stylistic variation and conventions of various text types. The aim of this course is for students to gain a critical awareness of linguistic choices in various contexts as well as providing opportunities for students to develop their English language skills.

- demonstrate a good command of English
Learning methods and activities
The course offers online teaching in a 13-week period. The course has online teaching units, which cover the various topics introduced in the course. There are one or more online meetings over the course of the semester. Obligatory activities cover various aspects of the course. Students are given feedback on obligatory activities and offered supervision. The course blog and discussion forum are actively used for course-related interaction.
Other
This is a fully online course. Information pertaining to access to the course is sent to the email address registered for the student. All communication throughout the run of the course will take place on the course site and learning platform, and NTNU's student email. Students are required to follow all communication channels used by the course.
Students need access to an updated computer and a good Internet connection. Students need access to the necessary equipment for online meetings and to record sound and video in an audiovisual presentation.

Further on evaluation
Assignments are assessed as approved/not approved, and they are not part of the final examination grade, but all obligatory assignments must be approved in order for the student to qualify to take the exam. Two of the obligatory assignments are subject to revision based on feedback and will be submitted in the exam portfolio at the end of the semester.
The course concludes with a portfolio exam, consisting of 3 elements (written assignment, video presentation, reflective text). The portfolio is given one overall grade, and all elements must be assessed as meeting requirements for a passing grade. This applies to postponed exams as well. The exam must be answered in English.

Recommended previous knowledge
Good language skills in English (reading, writing and oral language skills).
Required previous knowledge
Students should have knowledge of English equivalent to that of students who have learned English over two years at Norwegian "videregående skole". Admission to a study programme is required: KTC1
