About the course

Course content

The course offers an introduction to different philosophical and ethical methods, approaches, and argumentative strategies as well relevant academic craftsmanship. In this connection, the course also includes a study of philosophical texts from different philosophical traditions, eras, and schools in a comparative perspective.

Learning outcome

According to the course curriculum, a candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome (defined as knowledge and skills):

Knowledge:

The candidate has attained

  • Knowledge of different methods, approaches, and argumentative strategies used in philosophy and ethics as well as knowledge of relevant academic craftsmanship
  • Knowledge of central problems, perspectives, theories, and methods in philosophy and ethics
  • Knowledge of how central thinkers in the past and present have sought to justify answers to philosophical questions, and how they have attempted to criticize alternative answers to these questions.
  • Insight into and understanding of how different perspectives, methods, and theories are interconnected.

Skills:

The candidate has

  • The ability to present philosophical texts orally
  • The ability to reflect over philosophical method based on philosophical texts and their own academic perspective
  • The ability to write an academic text in philosophy

Learning methods and activities

Seminars, self-study and oral presentation. The teaching consists of a study of a broad range of philosophical traditions, perspectives and methods seen through different texts. In addition, there will be focus on how one writes an academic text in philosophy.

The obligatory activity can only be approved the semester the course is taught but is valid for this semester and the subsequent semester.

Compulsory assignments

  • Up to two oral presentations
  • 80% attendance at seminar

Further on evaluation

The evaluation is based on one written assignment (term paper) that should be 5000-6000 words.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Philosophy and Ethics (MFI)

Required previous knowledge

Admission to the Master's programme in Philosophy and Ethics.
