Course content
FILM1100 is a base level course which provides the student with basic knowledge of film as a medium and an art form. The course provides an introduction to film studies as an academic discipline and equips the student with basic conceptual tools for discussing and analysing films.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the course the student will have:
- knowledge of terms related to cinematic storytelling and film style.
- knowledge of key film genres and their influence.
- knowledge of leading and alternative narrative forms.
- knowledge of how to work with film academically.
Skills
Upon successful completion of the course the student will know how to:
- identify and discuss basic components of film technique.
- identify and discuss key film genres.
- discuss classic cinematic storytelling and alternative narrative forms.
- independently use terms from the course in the academic analysis of film.
- write academic papers on film, critically read and use sources, and master an academic citation system.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, screenings and seminars. This includes supervised training in academic reading and writing. Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian, but may take place in English.
Students are required to stay updated on information from the department or course director via Blackboard.

The final course assessment consists of a 30 minute oral exam.
Course materials
The course reading list is about 1200 pages, plus the screened full-length films and series episodes.
