About the course

Course content

FILM1101 is a base level course which gives an introduction to the more than 100-year long history of film. The course highlights the origin of film as a technology and an art form, and discusses important eras and developments from the early days of cinema to today.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of the course the student has:

  • knowledge of both Norwegian and international film history.
  • knowledge of film's evolution from the first moving images to today's digital film technology.
  • knowledge of the development of leading and alternative film styles throughout history.
  • knowledge of key artistic and commercial lines of development throughout the history of film in Norway and the world.
  • basic knowledge of film historiography, that is to say how the history of film has been perceived and written about in different time periods.

Skills

Upon successful completion of the course, the student knows:

  • account for important developments in Norwegian and international film history.
  • distinguish and draw comparisons between movies from different eras and styles, and place them chronologically and stylistically.
  • discuss fundamental issues of film historiography.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, screenings and seminars, including supervised writing assignments. Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian, but may take place in English. Students are required to stay updated on information from the department or course director via Blackboard.

The final assessment consists of a 6-hour written exam.
