Course content

FILM1102 is a base level course which covers the history and development of film theory. The course provides the student with conceptual tools for the discussion and analysis of film in light of various positions in film theory.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the course the student will have:
- knowledge of early theories and debates about film as an art form, and film’s ability to capture reality.
- knowledge of positions in film theory in different eras.
- knowledge of theories relating to the social, political and cultural role of film.
- knowledge of theories relating to film comprehension, cognitive psychology and phenomenology.
- knowledge of traditions relating to film analysis.

Skills
Upon successful completion of the course the student will know how to:
- account for the development of different positions throughout the history of film theory, and compare them through discussion.
- place the emergence of discrete film theories in social, political and cultural contexts.
- perform independent film analyses based on film theory.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, film screenings and seminars, including supervised training in film analysis.

Students are required to stay updated on any information given by the department or course director via Blackboard. This course is taught in Norwegian only.

Further on evaluation

The final course assessment consists of a term paper of 5000-6000 words.

Course materials

The course reading list is about 1200 pages long, plus the screened full-length films.
