Course content

FILM1103 is a base level course that focuses on the role of film in the world around us. The course gives the student insight into key cultural, commercial and ideological issues regarding the importance of film in society.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the course the student will have:
- knowledge of the role of film in society, both as a commercial industry, as an art form and as a source of societal insights.
- knowledge of ideology, class, ethnicity, gender relations and violence in film.
- knowledge about cinema's institutions, such as production and distribution systems, financial support schemes, film criticism and censorship.

Skills
Upon successful completion of the course the student will know how to:
- conduct academic film analyses discussing the relationship between film and society.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and screenings. Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian, but may take place in English.

Students are required to stay updated on information from the department or course director via Blackboard.

Further on evaluation

The final course assessment consists of a 3-day home exam, where the student completes a written assignment of 3000-4000 words.

Course materials

The course reading list is about 600 pages, plus the screened full-length films and series episodes.
