Course content
FILM1105 is a base level course that focuses on the role of film and television in the world around us. The course gives the student insight into key cultural, commercial and ideological issues regarding the importance of film and television in society.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
After completing the course, the student has knowledge of:
- the role of film in society, both as a commercial industry, as an art form, and as a source of societal insights.
- the social, political and cultural role of film.
- theories about ideology, class, ethnicity, gender relations and violence in film.
- theories about film production, distribution and reception.
- film and television institutions, such as production and distribution systems, financial support schemes, film criticism, and censorship.
Skills
After completing the course, the student can:
- conduct academic analyses discussing the relationship between film and society.
- discuss the role of film and television in today's society.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, screenings, seminars, and a written assignment.
Students are required to stay updated on information from the department or course director via Blackboard.
