Course content

Students will gain insights into reading and writing texts, processing of information, collection of empirical data, and the assessment of research and research methods within the subject area relevant to their topic. Through independent work on their thesis the students will develop an increased familiarity with their discipline, producing a proficient presentation of their chosen topic.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the course the student will have:
- in-depth knowledge about a chosen subject.
- knowledge about accomplishing a scientific work.

Skills
Upon successful completion of the course the student will know how to:
- plan and implement an independent scientific research project on a chosen topic and with a chosen reading list.
- develop an academic text.
- present and substantiate their own findings, analyses and conclusions.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, tutorial seminars and individual supervision. The student will have supervision and feedback on the thesis outline and draft chapters. Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian, but may take place in English.

Group tutorials and individual supervision will help students to develop their research questions and conduct a review of the literature relevant to their individual topics. The organization of seminars will be based on the requirements of the students' chosen topics.

Compulsory assignments:
- Attending the introduction lecture.
- Students must submit a written topic by the end of week 4. Supervisors will be allocated on the basis of this submission.
- Students must submit a project outline of at least two pages, based on the previous submission, by the end of week 6.
- Students will give an oral presentation of their project, and also comment on other students' presentations.
- Students will have a minimum of two meetings with their supervisor before submitting the thesis.
- The individual reading list will consist of literature relevant to the thesis' topic, and this will be presented for comments in seminars or meetings with the individual supervisor. The individual reading list will be a part of the list of references in the thesis, but the list of references does not have to be limited to the individual reading list.

Further on evaluation

The final assessment consists of a written thesis of 6000-8000 words and an adjusting oral exam, which are letter graded. In the oral examination students will have the opportunity to defend their thesis and evaluate their work.

Students who fail must repeat both parts of the exam. A new thesis submission must have a new topic. It is not possible to write a bachelor's thesis in semesters where there is no teaching or supervision.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Film Studies (BFV)
Film and Video Production (BFVPROD)

Required previous knowledge

Admission to the Bachelor Programme i Film Studies or Film and Video Production, and a specialization (a minimum of 75 ECTS) in Film Study or in Film and Video Production (a minimum of 120 ECTS).

Course materials

The reading list is about 1200 pages. About 300 pages form a common nucleus of course literature, and a minimum of 900 pages are individually chosen texts.
