Course content

FILM2204 is an undergraduate course in film studies that explores different explanations of the viewing experiences that occur in encounters with films and series. The course may focus on, for example, affective engagement, embodied empathy, and cognitive reactions, and thus suggests a multi-layered approach to the film experience as a phenomenon.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student has knowledge of:

  • different theoretical approaches to the film experience.
  • audiovisual conventions that influence viewing experiences.
  • how these approaches and conventions can be used in analyses of the film experience.

Skills

After completing the course, the student can:

  • discuss different theoretical approaches to the film experience.
  • identify audiovisual conventions that influence viewer experiences.
  • employ these approaches and conventions in their own analyses of the film experience.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and screenings, as well as short written tasks. Teaching is conducted in Norwegian or English. Students are required to stay updated on information from the department or course director via Blackboard.

The final assessment is an oral exam of 30 minutes.
