Course content
FILM2205 is an undergraduate course that further develops the student's application of film studies perspectives in an independent written treatment of a topic of choice.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
After completing the course, the student has knowledge of:
- a film studies topic of choice.
- accomplishment of a film studies research project.
- development of an academic text.
Skills
After completing the course, the student can:
- present and explain film studies topics as well as their own findings, analyses and conclusions.
- plan and accomplish an independent film studies research project.
- write an academic text.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, seminars, and supervision in groups and individually.
The bachelor’s thesis can be written in Scandinavian or English. Every bachelor’s thesis must include a Scandinavian and English summary.
Students are required to stay updated on information from the department or course director via Canvas.
Compulsory assignments
- 80% attendance
- Presentation of own project, and response to fellow students' submissions
- Two meetings with supervisor
Further on evaluation
The final assessment consists of a written thesis of 5000-6000 words and an adjusting oral examination of 30 minutes. In the oral discussion the student will have the opportunity to defend and evaluate their thesis work.
Options for students who fail the bachelor's thesis:
- Revise and resubmit: Students can apply to submit a revised version of the thesis once in the following semester, but the thesis must be revised in accordance with the examiner's feedback.
- Submit a new thesis: Students can choose to work on a new thesis with a different research question. This is only possible in a semester where the course is being taught and supervised.
Improving the result
- It is not possible to submit a revised version if the thesis has been given a passing grade.
- To improve the grade, the course must be retaken, including all obligatory assignments, and a new thesis with a different topic must be submitted. This is only possible in a semester where the course is being taught and supervised.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Film Studies (BFV)
Required previous knowledge
75 credits in Film Studies.
Course materials
The syllabus is about 1200 pages divided between the self-selected syllabus and joint syllabus.
