Course content

This course expands the students’ knowledge when it comes to designing sound for film, television, music and art.

Learning outcome

Upon a successful completion of this course, students have knowledge of
- usage of sound and sound effects within the various genres of media and artistic expression and audio formats and standards
- histories and theories of film sound
- narrative and communicative qualities of sound
- sound perception

Upon a successful completion of this course, students have the ability to
- create narratives through sound
- manipulate and process expressions of sound
- design multichannel sound track for film and other audiovisual Art
- put theoretical concepts into use in discussion and production of sound

Learning methods and activities

Lectures / seminars and practical assignments. The course has compulsory activities in the practical assignments.

The students are required to keep posted on messages from the department or teacher at Blackboard.

This course is taught in Norwegian only.

Further on evaluation

The final assessment consists of one practical examination and one oral examination. Each examination count 50% of the final grade. Both examinations must be passed in order to complete the course and get a final grade.

If the student fails only one of the examinations, the student can retake the failed examination. The mark of the passed examination will be valid until both examinations are passed and a final combined grade is given.

The timeframe for retaking the practical examinatin may vary, according to the Deparments production ressource capacity.

Specific conditions

Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Film and Videoproduction (MMPROD)
Music Technology (MMUST)

Required previous knowledge

Admission to the Master's programme in Film and Video Production or the Master’s programme in Music Technology is required.
