About the course

Course content

The seminar is held if there are enough interested students. The course will cover selected topics at advanced levels to broaden the participants' understanding of geology and its applications in science and society. The course participants will 1) teach lectures to bring all participants up to the level required to understand each other's research, 2) specify and discuss literature, and 3) give a talk on their own research.

Learning outcome

KNOWLEDGE The seminar will introduce the students to the modern area of research in the fields of the Ph.D. work of the course participants. The topics will vary substantially depending on participants' research.

SKILLS The participants will learn to communicate and present their work in a broader context than their own specialization, and are encouraged to take a critical attitude to established knowledge in the field.

GENERAL COMPETENCE As far as applicable, the participants should be able to put the course topics into a broader context and understand their relevance. The participants will be able to communicate research related problems with specialists and non-specialists.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures by course participants (compulsory attendance), reading, self-study.

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Engineering (PHIV)

Required previous knowledge

Attendance is restricted to NTNU Ph.D. students in the Ph.D. programme Engineering, programme options geology, mineral production and HSE, or engineering geology, and is to be approved by the course coordinator.
