Course content

The course introduces students to climate change and effects of climate change. The course draws on natural and social sciences. It covers the physical background of global warming, global and regional climate models, climate change effects on the physical and cultural landscapes, and feedback mechanisms. It addresses international mitigation agreements and renewable energy sources. Further, it discusses how social vulnerability is linked to consequences of extreme weather events and implications of climate change on development and social unrest.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: After the course, the students will have basic understanding of the physical background of global warming and its potential consequences for nature and society both globally and locally in Norway.
Skills: Students will be able to address and critically discuss adaptation and mitiation measures recognized as essential by researchers, how to communicate such knowledge, and why there is a lack of action among decision makers.
General competence: Through semester assignment, students will become a better writer (and reader) and will develop feedback competence.

Learning methods and activities

6 hours lecturers. On-line modules. Introduction to semester assignment and work.
Teaching will only be given if a sufficient number of students register for the course and if the Department has sufficient teaching resources. Information will be made available no later than 10 January in the spring semester and 10 August in the autumn semester.

Both exams must be submitted and approved (grade E or better)in order to pass the course. Same form of examination is given when re-sitting for the exam. Both exams must be taken together and in the same semester when lectured.
