Course content

The course offers different perspectives on economic globalization and global production networks, together with discussions on how this influences actions and strategies of entreprises, national states and civil society organizations. Focus is on business practices in a globalized knowledge economy and how strategies and actions occur at the interface between economy, politics and culture. Case examples illustrate how global value chains are embedded in networks at various geographical scales and create values, and how transnational corporation interacts with states as they make foreign direct investments. Cases cover also the cross cultural and social aspects of global production networks including corporate social responsibility. As part of the course the students have to write an individual semester assignment. The semester assignment must be approved before the examination can be taken.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The students shall gain theoretical knowledge on economic, political, social and cultural aspects of global production networks. The central aim is to provide a comprehensive insight into the relations between processes of economic globalization and company strategies.
Skills: The course provides skills in academic writing on these topics.
General competence: The course provides relevant competence for candidates who will work in companies and organizations operating internationally.

Learning methods and activities

18 hours lectures and assignment. The compulsory assignment must be completed and passed in order to enter the 4 hour written exam. The compulsory assignment and the exam must be completed in English. Exceptions must be clarified with the lecturer responsible for the course.

Required previous knowledge

The course is open for students on master`s level, preferable within the discipline of social science or technology/engineering. Other relevant qualification can be accepted upon approval by the Department of Geography.
