Course content

The Master thesis may be both disciplinary and/or didactic. The student should be able to describe the professional relevance of the Master Thesis.
The thesis comprises 30 credits and should be of 17 500 - 24 500 words (approximately 50-70 pages). The department has prepared a plan for thesis work, which makes it easier for students to complete the program within scheduled time.
Supervision is an essential component of the thesis. One of the academic staff at the department will be appointed as supervisor. Supervisor will be kept informed about the thesis. Theme/research question for the thesis assumed selected within an area where the staff at the department have research experience. The supervision will ensure the necessary quality assurance by collecting and processing empirical data, and that this takes place within ethical guidelines.
The thesis should contain scientific presentation of the selected topic. However the thesis follow scientific standards according to the reference guide and ethical norms. The thesis should initially contain a brief summary in English.
7th semester: The candidate must decide theme for the thesis already in the 7th semester of the master program. During this semester, students are made aware of potential supervisors and research projects at the department.
8th semester: Each should have been awarded a supervisor during the 8th semester. Also a progression plan needs to be written in consultation with the supervisor. The plan should include an explanation of the problem and research design, as well as a plan for the collection of empirical data and completion of the thesis. Students must also sign an agreement on the implementation of the master thesis. The master`s agreement regulates the supervision. During the 8th semester the students will complete the second PPU semester. If the research question indicate, it is important that students use the teaching practice to collect data for their thesis.
9th semester: In the cases where GEOG3091 is divided equally in the education plan between 9. and 10. semester, then the candidate should have read necessary background literature and completed fieldwork/data collection by mid-9th semester (mid October). The candidate should have started with the analysis by the end of this semester.
10th semester: First draft must be submitted by April 1 in the 10th semester. All master`s thesis should be submitted within the given timeframe. It is possible to apply for deferred submission on the basis of a medical certificate, or by arrangement with the department. Final examination will be held at the end of 10th semester.

Knowledge: Has specialized insight within a limited area in geography.
Skills: Can conduct independent, limited research work under supervision and in accordance with current research ethical norms.
General: Communicate comprehensive self-employment and master the field of expression of the subject area.

Learning methods and activities

Assessment: Master's thesis, as well as 1 hour oral examination based on the thesis work. At the beginning of the oral examination the candidate must hold a 10-15 minute presentation of the master thesis. It will not be possible to use PowerPoint or similar presentation tools.

Further on evaluation

Examination: Master`s thesis and one hour oral defence of the thesis. The deadline for submission of the thesis is normally in May. At the beginning of the oral examination the candidate must hold a 10-15-minute presentation of the thesis. The candidate must also be able to explain the job proficiency. It will not be possible to use PowerPoint or similar presentation tools. The grade for the master's thesis may be adjusted after the oral examination.

Required previous knowledge

Passed examination in the obligatory and elective courses.
