Course content
The course deals with scientific and technical communication, orally, in writing, visually, and using social media. Emphasis is placed on effective and clear communication of difficult academic material to different target groups. Ethical use of AI and social media are also important topics.
Learning outcome
The course aims to provide students with thorough knowledge in oral, written, and visual communication of scientific and technical material.
Knowledge: The course aims to give students the ability to adapt communication formats to suit different target groups, such as school children/youth, an interested public, or professionals with extensive knowledge. Students should have a good knowledge of producing high-quality technical and scientific documentation using various digital tools, including AI (LLM). Oral presentation skills are also practiced. Students also practice collaboration by working in groups.
Skills: Students should master searching relevant databases (library skills), using references correctly, and compiling knowledge on a current topic in a scientific manner. Students should also master common software for producing text, figures, and visual information. Students should have a reflective attitude towards the ethical use of AI to create text and visual content.
Learning methods and activities
Colloquia and workshops mainly covering the following topics:
- Technical and scientific writing
- Creating technical and scientific figures and illustrations
- Oral presentation
- Poster presentation
- Other communication, video, and social media
Compulsory assignments
- Information literacy (literature search) and written report
- Oral presentation of the report
- Visual presentation with poster/manual/pamphlet
Further on evaluation
Portfolio assessment consisting of a total of four parts: Information literacy (literature search) and written report (20%), oral presentation of the report (20%), visual presentation with poster/manual/pamphlet and a new topic to be presented in optional format, text/oral/visual/sound (podcast)/photo/video/social media (40%). The three parts counting 20% each are also compulsory activities.
Information about submission deadlines, weighting, formal requirements etc. for the different parts will be given at the start of the semester and published in Blackboard.
For re-take of the course, all parts of the portfolio must be re-taken.
