About the course

Course content

The aim of the course is to provide students with an introduction to the theories, methods and other ways of working within history as an academic discipline.

Learning outcome

The following learning outcomes should be expected upon completion of the course:

Knowledge:
The candidate has
-Knowledge about important methodological challenges within historical research.
-Critical awareness in using Internet and other digital information as sources.
-Fundamental knowledge about the historical development of history as a field of study.
-Knowledge about some important discussions concerning digital history

Skills:
The candidate has
-Advanced command of the practice of source criticism.
-Advanced abilities in discerning between various types of sources used in history.
-Skills in search and assessment of potential sources in history.
-Basic abilities in interpreting and implementing historical statistics, tables and graphs in historical studies.
-Skills in oral presentation and use of media technology.

Learning methods and activities

This course will be based on so-called "blended learning", where concentrated meetings on campus are supplemented with online material- and -activities. Some of the meetings may be held outside campus. Further information will be given at the start of the semester. Further information on this will be given before the course begins.
The learning activities in the course are structured around a major assignment. The assignment is mandatory, and may be divided into several smaller subtasks. Students should expect to bring their own computer in class and be prepared to install the necessary software. Information on technical details will be given in advance. For special needs, contact the responsible lecturer.
