About the course
Course content
The topic for the master's thesis is selected in consultation with a supervisor, preferably in connection with an existing research project. An overview of ongoing projects at the department will be available at the beginning of each semester.
The thesis is a an academic study or analysis carried out by the candidate individually, under supervision.
The thesis should add to the student's qualifications as a teacher of history, as stated in "den nasjonale rammeplanen for lektorutdanning". A thesis can be a thesis in history didactics, if not the thesis must show it's relevance for the teacher profession in some other way (preface, introduction, conclusion).
The thesis should normally contain between 40-60 pages (this is calculated assuming the use of standard A4 paper, 1.5 line spacing, and Times New Roman as font/typeface).
Learning outcome
A candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:
Knowledge:
The candidate
- has substantial knowledge in the field of research for the master thesis
- is familiar with historiography and different perspectives used by historians to explain fundamental historical themes in the period of specialization
Skills:
The candidate
- is able to use a broad range of information and critically analyze a problem
- is able to develop ideas and problems, give advice and elaborate and evaluate different sorts of historical problems
- has substantial knowledge on how to use historical method as a analytical tool
Learning methods and activities
Individual supervision. The grade given on the thesis may be adjusted after the oral exam (20-30 min.).

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Lektorutdanning i historie (MLHIST)
Required previous knowledge
Requires admission to the five-year teaching education programme with an integrated master's degree in History.
