About the course

Course content

The course will provide an introduction to chemical working environment factors. Terminology, definitions and occurrence of various chemical exposure factors are presented. What health effects can occur and when and where they act. How can you identify and assess this factors and what rules, methods and limits are available? What is risk and what measures are effective and how can they be used to reduce exposure. What legislation exists within the area. Measurement methods will be presented and demonstrated.

Learning outcome

The course will provide general knowledge on toxicology with important elements from toxicokinetic and mechanisms for certain health effects. Specific knowledge about the toxicological properties of substances and on substance-groups, and about health effects following exposure via the lungs and skin. Specific knowledge about the identification and measurement of chemical exposure factors. Specific knowledge about preventive measures, with particular emphasis on substitution, elimination, administrative procedures, ventilation and personal protective equipment. The course shall give the student skills to assess and analyze chemical working environments in companies, to recommend appropriate preventive measures to reduce the risk of health damage and to report the results of an occupational hygiene risk assessment in an appropriate manner.

Learning methods and activities

The course is designed to accommodate both in-person participation and digital/gathering-based teaching f. Weekly in-person teaching sessions are made available digitally. Additionally, there will be full-day gatherings. During these gatherings the students will be offered laboratory instruction. The course includes a semester project written in groups. Students will be offered the opportunity to present their project to their peers.

Further on evaluation

Sub assignment is the basis for the grade in the course. The sub assignment consist of a term paper (40%) and a final written school exam (60%). If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
