Course content

Location, site and soil conditions

Selection of support systems and stiffeners. Pick up loads

Elements.Composite structures. Foundations.

Design of steel, timber and concrete structures using hand calculation methods and contemporary software.
Earthquake.

Design and visualization using 3D modulation BIM / digitization

Drawings -including working drawings.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
Laws, rules and regulations applicable to the design and construction of buildings and civil engineering works.

Structural systems and materials for civil engineering structures and the impact these will have on the performance and utility of the structure .

 

Skills:

Perform the design of structural systems for ordinary buildings and be part of a design team in major construction projects.

Design structural systems.

Use contemporary software for analysis and design of structures and for making structural drawings.

Know the Norwegian and European standards in relevant areas.

General competence:

The candidate master terminology and can communicate with people in the field of design and construction works.

The candidate can choose materials and structural systems in a holistic perspective.

The candidate is able to present the results from studies and analyzes both written and oral.

The candidate can make drawings.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises and visits to local building sites parallel with individual assignments and team project works.  

Mandatory assignments:

Digital working folder (portfolio) that will contain mandatory work requirements of the semester. The assignments will be announced in the e-learning tools. The tasks will be related to the subject themes and can be individual or group work tasks.The portfolio should contain:

 Major design and dimensjoning task in group

 Self-evaluation of work done in group.

 There will also be given individual assignments in connection with lectures-will consist of one or more individual tasks.

Specific conditions

Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.

Civil Engineering (003BY)
Water and Environmental Engineering (561VM)

Required previous knowledge

IB 205014 Structural Design and statics. IB204714 Building Technology and materials. IF100512 Mechanics and Physics or equivalent qualifications.
