About the course

Course content

The course will give students a fundamental introduction to central tools, principles and methods for graphic design on a variety of screens such as smartphones and tablets. The course includes numerous practical exercises and the student is expected to demonstrate responsibility for independent learning and development throughout the semester.

Learning outcome

Learning Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student has foundational knowledge of:

  • Graphic design for digital media
  • Sketching techniques
  • Basic typography
  • Color usage
  • Layout and composition
  • And the ability to explain different genres within design for digital media

Skill Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student can:

  • Use basic functions in graphic tools to process, save, and export graphic elements for presentation and publication
  • Make informed choices regarding file types and aesthetics in graphic production, considering both production and sustainability perspectives

General Competence Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • Make basic graphical, tool-related, and methodological choices necessary to develop graphic materials in an appropriate way
  • Use these to improve or develop new graphic materials

Two out of three assignments must be passed in each module, as well as submission of a semester portfolio as the last compulsory activity before the exam.

Evaluation:

  • Compulsory work requirements divided into 3 modules + a semester portfolio must be approved in order to be allowed to take the exam
  • Oral Exam (counts 100%)

All compulsory work requirements must be approved to pass the course and be eligible to sit for the exam. If not passed, the course must be retaken at the next regular execution of the course. Under such circumstances, the department may evaluate and potentially accept previously submitted coursework from an earlier completion of the course.

A re-sit examination is scheduled around the start of the fall semester as needed (can only be taken if all mandatory activities have already been passed during the regular implementation of the course).
