About the course

Course content

The course provides an introduction to basic theory and principles in typography, composition, color, and universal design, as well as an introduction to digital design tools. Students learn to develop simple digital design solutions, where aesthetics, function, and usability are central parts. There is also an emphasis on critical reflection on their own and others' design solutions.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, the student should have the following learning outcomes in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student has

  • knowledge of basic principles of typography, composition and color theory
  • knowledge of principles of universal design, as well as knowledge of the WCAG standard
  • knowledge of how wireframes and storyboards can be used as tools to communicate and test ideas in early phases of a design process
  • an understanding of how structure, hierarchy and visual coherence affect the user experience in digital products

Skills

The student can

  • design user-friendly and visually holistic digital design solutions based on basic typographic, compositional and color principles
  • use professional design tools to develop digital prototypes
  • justify their own design choices based on relevant theory and insight

General competence

The student can

  • work independently and in a structured way with creative and visual work
  • reflect critically on one's own work in a professional and ethical context

Learning methods and activities

  • Video and digital lectures
  • Individual work with practical tasks
  • The course may be offered to incoming exchange students and may be taught in English.

Further on evaluation

Portfolio with practical tasks that the students have been worked on throughout the course, including documentation of process and written justification for design solutions.

If a student fail to pass the course, the student may, by agreement with the course responsible, submit an improved version.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Digital Design (ÅRDES)

Required previous knowledge

Registered as student in study program Digital design or selected HumSam study programs.
