Designing complex serial publications.

Learning outcome

The student is in possession of operational knowledge about punctuation and microtypography according to national rules of orthography, different bibliographical reference systems, different areas of scientific and scholarly inquiry, different house styles, and different typographic conventions.
The student can in a purposeful and systematic manner handle hyphenation and justification parametres and micro-typographic variables both with respect to context and genre.
The student can implement a design or redesign project of a journal while adhering to genre conventions, based on a contemporary and appealing visual language – while aiming at a high level of practical functionality, usability and informativity, and which combines a consistent visual identity with an appropriate level of visual differentiation from number to number and from volume to volume.
As a team member in a design or redesign project of a serial publication, the student will be able to contribute with constructive suggestions about technical and editorial development which takes into account needs and preferences of readers, authors, editors and production staff.

Learning methods and activities

Combined individual and two-person group project, with weekly supervision (formative-iterative evaluation). Sketches, the work process, and the end result must be documented.

Further on evaluation

Summative assessment at the end of term: Passed/failed. The project then becomes part of a work portfolio and can later be choosen by the student to be included in the final presentation portfolio of ten practical design projects which will be marked by a group of internal and external examinors at the end of the study programme’s third and last year (grading scale A–F). See the programme description for BA Graphic Design for further information about the final evaluation and grading of the presentation portfolio.
