About the course
Course content
Sampling. Aliasing. Leakage. Quantization. Discrete-time systems and signals. Linear and circular convolution. DFT and FFT. DTFT and frequency response. Digital filters (FIR/IIR). z-transform. Introduction to adaptive filters, multi-rate signal processing and wavelets. Examples from sound- and image processing.
Learning outcome
Knowledge - The candidate shall be able to:
- Describe the sampling theorem and its implications in the frequency domain.
- Analyze discrete-time signals and systems.
- Describe the direct form I and II for FIR/IIR digital filters and transposed forms.
- Analyze digital filters in the z-domain and in the frequency domain.
- Know about adaptive filters, multi-rate signal processing and wavelets.
Skills - The candidate shall be able to:
- Calculate the DTFT and DFT/IDFT of some basic signals.
- Calculate the z-transform and the inverse z-transform of some basic signals.
- Calculate the linear and circular convolution of digital signals.
- Design digital filters (FIR/IIR) using computational tools such as Matlab/Octave.
General competence - The candidate shall be able to:
- Know both Norwegian and English appropriate scientific expressions.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures. Mandatory exercises.
The number of exercises are given at semester start. The mandatory activities must be delivered according to given deadlines and must be approved to be allowed to take the exam.

If there is a resit exam in August, the examination form may change from written to oral.
Approved work requirements from earlier years might be reapproved by the institute.
