  • Transmission and distribution networks with associated switching systems, transformer stations, lines/cables and other components
  • Symmetrical and asymmetrical grids
  • Voltage drop, loss and compensation in point to point transfer
  • Inductance and capacitance of cables
  • Modelling of transmission lines
  • Load and short circuit calculations
  • Power transformer characteristics and equivalent diagram
  • Per unit description
  • Load flow calculations
  • Developments in future electrical energy systems

Learning outcome

Knowledge

After completing the course, students should:

  • have basic knowledge of electric power networks
  • know the basic characteristics and structure of power systems
  • understand the main physical and technical characteristics of the power grid
  • know the most basic methods for performing power transmission calculations

Skills

Students should be able to:

  • obtain basic skills in power grid operation
  • perform short circuit and load calculations
  • apply per unit models and admittance matrices
  • perform load flow calculations General competence
  • use analytical methods
  • work independently and in groups

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and exercises. Project assignments based on group work (A/F). Exercises and the project assignment must be submitted for admission to the final exam. Mandatory work requirements are announced at the start of the course.

Compulsory assignments

  • Assessment

Further on evaluation

Part assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The parts includes a written exam (60%) and two project work (20% + 20%). The results for the parts are given in A-F grades, which are later merged to a final grade.

Mandatory exercises must be approved and the project must not be failed to be able to get access to the exam. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may change from written to oral. In the case that the student receives an F/Fail as a final grade after both ordinary and re-sit exam, then the student must retake the course in its entirety.

Permitted examination aids, support material code D: No printed or hand-written support material is allowed. A specific basic calculator is allowed. In addition, calculator Casio fx-991EX is allowed.

Re-sit exam will be held in August.
