About

About the course

Course content

- Ideal and real gases: ideal gas law and van der Waals state equation - First Law of Thermodynamics: Work and heat. Internal energy, enthalpy and heat capacity. Reversible processes. - Second law of Thermodynamics: entropy, Gibbs energy, chemical equilibrium. - Phase equilibria for pure substances and ideal mixtures - Colligative properties: vapor pressure reduction, freezing point reduction, boiling point elevation, osmotic pressure. - Electrolyte solutions: Electrolyte conductivity, mean activity coeffisient, dissociation rate, ions transport, Debye-Hückel boundary law. - Reaction kinetics: the rate law, half-life of a reaction, simple reaction mechanisms, rate-determining steps and catalysis.

Learning outcome

The candidate: - Understands the behavior of gases, and can use ideal gas law and van der Waals state equation to evaluate gases deviation from ideality - Has basic knowledge of thermodynamics and can calculate internal energy, enthalpy, entropy, heat and work for isochore, isobar, isotherm and adiabatic reversible processes. - Can explain and apply relevant formulas for thermodynamic calculations to chemical reactions, and compare with calculations made in relevant computer tools (eg HSC Chemistry) - Can explain the Ellingham diagram and know how it is used to find thermodynamic data - Has basic knowledge of phase equivalents for pure substances and ideal mixtures, and can use phase diagrams to discuss phase transitions and phase composition - Can use thermodynamics for solutions and mixtures to calculate relevant properties - Have an overview of important concepts in reaction kinetics catalysis, can solve simple rate laws and explain selected reaction mechanisms based on rate laws and reaction order - Can plan and carry out laboratory work in kinetics and thermodynamics, and document the work in written reports

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises and laboratory work. Expected time consumption: Lectures: 50 hours Exercises: 35 hours Laboratory course: 45 hours (includes preparation and report writting) Self study: 70 hours Total: 200 hours

Compulsory assignments

  • Laboratory work
  • Exercise

Further on evaluation

Facilities at final exam: SI Chemical Data and specific, simple calculator. All compulsory work requirements (exercises and laboratory work) must be approved to take the final written examination. Information about requirements for the number of approved exercises and details of mandatory activities in the laboratory work will be provided at the beginning of the semester. In case of re-sit exam, written exam may be changed to oral exam. For applications for crediting, approval and integration of courses from previous years or other institutions' equivalent education, each application will be dealt with individually and the applicant must be able to count credits for overlapping courses.
