Course content

Corrosion theory, thermodynamic and electrodekinetic conditions, Pourbaix diagram and polarization curves, passivity. Common types of corrosion, characteristic features, mechanisms and measures. Impact of metallurgical, physical and mechanical factors. The corrosion properties of the main structural materials. Inhibitors, cathodic protection, monitoring and measurement principles. Surface treatment for corrosion protection. Test methods

Learning outcome

The candidate:

  • Has a basic understanding of the theoretical basis of wet corrosion on metallic materials and can calculate and construct Pourbaix diagrams and overpotential curves and further use these to calculate corrosion rates or predict passivity or immunity.
  • Can distinguish and describe characteristic features and mechanisms, thereby identifying different types of corrosion.
  • Has an overview of various methods to reduce the likelihood of corrosion starting, such as surface treatment, cathodic protection and inhibitors and may suggest suitable methods for specific environment.
  • Can plan, conduct and report corrosion tests in the laboratory.
  • Can actively participate in discussions and testing in the laboratory to identify causes of corrosion-related damage and propose solutions such as alternative material choices and anti-corrosion measures also based on relevant standards.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises, PBL (including brainstorming, lab work, written report, oral presentation), ordinary laboratory work. Expected time consumption: Lectures: 50 hours Lab work: 25 hours PBL: 30 hours Exercises: 20 hours Own contribution: 75 hours Total: 200 hours

Compulsory assignments

  • Exercises
  • PBL project with lab
  • Laboratory work

Further on evaluation

All compulsory work requirements (exercises, laboratory work and project work) must be approved to take the final written examination. Project work must be approved to submit project report. Information about requirements for the number of approved exercises and details of mandatory activities will be provided in the project work at the beginning of the semester.   In case of re-sit exam, written exam may be changed to oral exam. Voluntary repeating of the final written exam is possible, but not the project. For applications for crediting, approval and integration of courses from previous years or other institutions' equivalent education, each application will be dealt with individually and the applicant must be able to count credits for overlapping courses.
