Learning outcome
Knowledge
The student:
- Can name organic compounds according to IUPAC rules.
- Can identify and classify key functional groups.
- Can describe and assign configuration to chiral centers and explain stereochemistry and resonance.
- Understands how structure influences the physical properties of organic compounds.
- Has an overview of fundamental reaction types and their mechanisms.
- Can explain the structure and basic function of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids, and relate this to functional groups.
- Is familiar with research in organic and biomolecular chemistry.
Skills
The student:
- Can carry out simple organic and biochemical laboratory experiments in a safe and systematic manner.
- Can plan and perform the synthesis of simple organic molecules.
- Can analyze, interpret, and discuss laboratory results and present them in simple reports.
- Can use electronic tools to draw molecular structures, model, and perform nomenclature tasks.
- Can collaborate in groups, contribute to problem-solving, and apply subject knowledge to practical and theoretical tasks.
General competence
The student:
- Can connect laboratory work and academic issues to working life and further studies.
- Demonstrates responsibility, safety awareness, and quality in laboratory work.
- Understands the importance of environmentally conscious choices and basic sustainability assessment in chemical work.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, theory exercises, group exercises with mandatory attendance, and laboratory work with mandatory attendance. Expected working hours: Lectures: 75 hours Laboratory exercises: 25 Own input: 140
Compulsory assignments
- Laboratory work
- Exercises
Further on evaluation
All compulsory work requirements (exercises and laboratory work) are required to pass the final exam.
Resit exam: August. In the case of a resit exam (continuation exam), the written exam may be changed to an oral exam.
Allowed Exam Aids: Certainly simple calculator. For applications for crediting, approval and integration of courses from previous years or other institutions' equivalent education, each application will be dealt with individually and the applicant must be able to count credits for overlapping courses.
