About

About the course

Course content

Typeface design is a practical design project where the student is introduced to fundamental techniques and skills related to the design of typefaces. The course contains assignments in the craft of type design, tools, composition and form, and a typeface design project with formative-iterative supervison.

Learning outcome

The student will develop further knowledge of letterforms and the connection between analog and digital tools, form and expression, and the connection between use context and letterform. The student will during the course design a typeface with a full Norwegian alphabet within a given genre of typefaces and for a specified purpose.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and individual project, with supervision (formative-iterative evaluation). Sketches, the work process, and the end result must be documented. The course is run by typface designer Veronika Burian (from Type Together).

Further on evaluation

Summative assessment at the end of the semester: Passed / failed. The project(s) may then be included in a portfolio for final summative graded assessment (by a group of internal and external examiners) at the end of the third and final year (grades A–F).

If failed, the course must be taken anew.
