Course content

Research or development project in chemistry. The topic of the project is chosen in cooperation with the supervisor within the relevant research activity at the Department. The research project will include several of the following components:

  • Planning and carrying out a research project in chemistry, based on literature and/or the expertise of the relevant research group at the department.
  • Production, structuring, and analysis of data.
  • Formulation and testing of hypothesis.
  • Literature review.
  • Writing a research project report.

Learning outcome

The Specialization project gives the student a deeper insight and knowledge about the chosen topic and gives an introduction to research-based project work.

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student can:

  • Describe theories, models, and methods that are relevant to the topic of the project.
  • Describe how their research findings relate to existing knowledge within the field, and place the findings within a broader academic (chemical) context.

Skills

After completing the course, the student can:

  • Perform a literature review for acquiring up-to-date knowledge, relevant to the given project.
  • Use theories, models, and methods relevant to the topic of the project.
  • Interpret, analyze and critically evaluate their results.

General knowledge

After completing the course, the student can:

  • Work in a research team and plan and execute a research project within chemistry in collaboration with the research team.
  • Present their results in a written report.
  • Perform safe laboratory work per the HSE policy of NTNU and the department of Chemistry (if the project includes experimental laboratory work).

Learning methods and activities

Individual research project with supervision. The project work may include one or two presentations (oral, poster, etc.) during and/or at the end of the project. A final written project report is to be handed in at the end of the project.

Further on evaluation

The evaluation of the project is based on the final written project report.

If the project report is evaluated as not meeting the minimum academic criteria (grade F - Fail), the student can submit a new/substantially revised report for a new evaluation (this can only be done once).

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Chemistry (MSCHEM)
Miscellaneous Courses - Faculty of Natural Sciences (EMNE/NV)

Required previous knowledge

The student must have passed the basic chemistry courses, and courses at level II that are required for the topic of the research project.

Course materials

The course material is defined at the start of the project in collaboration with the supervisor.
