About the course

Course content

The course contents is dependent upon each individual student's choice of topic for their Master's thesis. The thesis may discuss different kinds of artworks, research and sources. The thesis must be of a mature and precise scholarly nature, with a clear outline of the material. The use of source material must be accounted for, and the thesis must offer a clear chain of argument and brought to a conclusion. The scope of the thesis is between 30.000 - 40.000 words. The word count does not include the front page, preface, table of content, literature or attachments. The number of words must be stated on one of the initial pages, and the student is responsible for its accuracy.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have:

  • comprehensive knowledge of a specific field within the discipline of art history
  • thorough knowledge of relevant theoretical approaches to the chosen subject
  • thorough knowledge of the formal design of a Master's thesis as genre

Skills

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will know how to:

  • carry out an scholarly exposition and standard outline of the chosen theme
  • in a mature and accurate manner provide an individual and scientific discussion of the sources (data/literature/references)
  • provide a critical discussion of the chosen sources (references)
  • forward questions and hypotheses connected to the projects specific material
  • discuss the content towards a plausible conclusion in accordance with a logic disposal of the relevant material
  • present and mediate the subject to the audience

Learning methods and activities

General instruction: Seminars, individual supervision and compulsory activities.

Writing the thesis under supervision from the individually appointed supervisor. Please see link for the numbers of hours of supervision eligible for your Master's thesis.

The master’s thesis can be written in Scandinavian or English. Every master’s thesis must include a Scandinavian and English summary.

The students are required to keep posted on messages from the department or teacher at Blackboard.

Compulsory assignments

  • Oral presentation of the project to the academic community
  • Project description with bibliography in collaboration with the supervisor, totaling 5000 words

Further on evaluation

The final assessment of the Master's thesis is adjusted by an oral examination. The oral examination consists of a public presentation of the dissertation lasting approximately 30 minutes and a succeeding discussion of the thesis with the group of sensors lasting at least 30 minutes.

Art History (MKUH)

Required previous knowledge

The course KUH3000 or KUH3001- Sources, Theory and Method in the Art History must have been completed.
