Course content

The course on medieval Marian iconography offers a deeper picture of European visual arts between Late Antiquity and the Renaissance, with special emphasis on the high and late middle ages. Besides a survey of important developmental features in the art of this period, the course will address questions related to Mary's "eternal virginity" and how this has been visualized in art. How images can be seen as results and expressions of popular as well as theological concepts of the divine will be analyzed through concrete examples and the use of current theory and method, especially the iconographic-iconological method.
