About the course

Course content

Basic functions of machines and machine elements and their mechanical integrity. This includes, but not limited to:

  • 2D/3D stresses and failure criterias
  • Pressure vessels
  • Mechanisms and transmissions: Mechanics of the screw, gears.
  • Couplings and brakes: Disc break (evenly distributed pressure and wear), drum brake (internal and external), fixed and releaseable couplings.
  • Bearings: roller bearings, bearing design, life time assessment.
  • Springs: torsion, coil, leaf, ring and rubber springs.
  • Press and shrink-fit connections: deformation of thick-walled tubes, tolerances and fits.
  • Bolts: threads, load carrying capacity, pretension, tightening/torque moment, bolt diagram.
  • Welded joints: static and fatigue analyses.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The candidate has knowledge of: The properties and applications of steel as construction material; Design and functioning of machine parts; Calculation and engineering design; Use of standards and catalogs.

Skills:

The candidate is able to design machine elements according to functional requirements.

General competence:

The candidate has insight into the technical consequences of chosen solutions. The candidate can use own skills and can communicate results orally and in writing in collaboration with other engineers.
