About the course
Course content
Course description: Semester 3C is mainly dedicated to environmental- and social medicine. During the semester the students should expand their knowledge of and skills in medical behavioural subjects and patient-doctor communication, environmental medicine, epidemiology and medical statistics, and clinical decision-making, and apply this knowledge in a practical/clinical setting. The students should also procure new knowledge within the fields of general practice social medicine, public health, occupational medicine, environmental medicine, preventive medicine, geriatrics, health service administration and economy, social inequality in health, and women's health. Elements of history of medicine, ethics and forensic medicine are also taught.
An important part of the semester is the 6-week apprenticeship in general practice/primary care.

The course is mainly taught in Norwegian, but some classes may be taught in English.
Compulsory assignments
- Approved clinical practice in primary health care
- Approved exercises in public health
- Approved exercise in general medicine

Compulsory assignments
Compulsory activity is assessed as approved or not approved and consists of the following three components.
- Approved practice in the primary health service (6 weeks)
- Approved written submission of two public health theses
- Approved completion of the general practice task. This includes both written submission and participation in group work.
Students with approved compulsory activity do not need to take this again in the event of a re-take of the exam
A maximum of 10% absence can be approved. Absence between 11% and 20% that is documented with a medical certificate can be made up for with extended practice, upon application and agreement between the practice institution and NTNU. Absence of more than 20% means that the student must complete the entire practical training period again.
Students with approved compulsory activity do not need to complete this again in the event of a re-take of the exam.
Examination
The exam in the course consists of a written assessment.
- Written exam, 6 hours
The written exam includes subject areas taught in the courses MD4053 and MD4061. In addition, up to 1/3 of the exam can be linked to academic content and learning outcome descriptions (LUB) from previous years.

Medical studies (CMED)
Required previous knowledge
Admission requirements:CMED and passed the fifth year of Medical School (MD4051 and MD4053).
Approved student license.
