Course content

The course promotes knowledge and utilization of physical activity for brain health throughout life, offering participants the opportunity to hear from experts in the field through digital lectures. The course aims to provide insight into exercise physiology, the fundamental principles of training, lifestyle changes, and considerations specific to individuals at risk of cognitive decline. Upon completion, participants will have knowledge in exercise physiology, the healthy and the diseased brain, brain aging, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Knowledge

The student has:

  • Basic knowledge about dementias
  • Basic knowledge of exercise physiology
  • Knowledge and utilization of physical activity for brain health throughout life
  • Knowledge about effective training programs for a healthy brain
  • Knowledge of brain structure and functioning in health and disease.

Skills

The student can:

  • Plan and carry out effective training programs for healthy brain ageing
  • Use various types of eHealth tools and activity monitors for monitoring, follow-up and motivating patients with lifestyle disease.

General competence

The student has:

  • Insight into basic exercise physiology, training principles, healthy brain ageing, lifestyle changes and special conditions in patients with reduced cognitive function
  • Knowledge about molecular secrets of beneficial effects of exercise training upon brain health.

Learning methods and activities

The course is completely digital. It consists of digital lectures, one 2-hours lecture per week (January April), a written report on a course-related theme, and ends with a digital home exam.

Further on evaluation

To take the exam, students must submit a written report and have it approved. The home exam is graded as approved/not approved.

Students retaking the course, must take the exam again. An approved written report is valid for re-taking the exam over 4 semesters.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
MH - Continuing education - Category E - Lower degree - Funding 65% Institution 35% Student (MHEVUEL65)

Required previous knowledge

General university entrance qualification or equivalent. As a minimum, participants must have finished 3 years of high school to be qualified.

Course materials

About 30 published scientific papers will serve as the course curriculum. The papers are delivered as PDF-files at the start of the course or in conjunction with a digital lecture on a related theme.
