About the course
Course content
Arts and crafts 1 consists of two semesters, subject 1 and subject 2, and qualify for teaching in arts and crafts from grades 5 to 10 in primary school.
The subject contributes to insight into the subject's core elements art and design processes, cultural understanding, craft skills and visual communication, where the elements are linked to subject didactic reflection.
The subject has an aesthetic (sensory) approach to learning where both the practical and the cognitive are intertwined in exploratory creative learning processes without clear answers. These aim to stimulate curiosity, a desire to explore, courage, creative joy and problem solving in a learning environment based on security and dialogue. It promotes independence, identity development, analytical skills and critical reflection. The interdisciplinary topic of public health and coping with life is therefore a natural part of the course.
The arts and crafts subject is interdisciplinary through, among other things, work with natural materials, floor plans and calculations, written reports and logs. Knowledge of cultural and social development is represented through art historical themes, cultural heritage and sustainability perspectives.
Subject 2 consists of four areas:
Design: the subject challenges work with issues related to design, everyday aesthetics and sustainable development. Basic training is provided in materials and techniques within various design areas such as wood, ceramics, textiles and visual communication. Facilitation is provided for the student's own creative process of objects that primarily cover practical needs.
Architecture: the subject focuses on the experience of indoor and outdoor spaces that affect our everyday life as well as knowledge of local building customs and national styles. Investigative and creative work is linked to the local environment. Through drawing and building different types of models, awareness of three-dimensional spaces is increased.
Art and cultural understanding: the course focuses on cultural understanding with an emphasis on Norwegian and international handicrafts, design and architecture from historicism to the present day. The area provides a basis for planning teaching, experience and the development of knowledge about and awareness of the form expressions of different periods and cultures. Through the exploration of various cultural expressions, one can increase awareness of democracy and citizenship and see oneself and others in a historical and cultural context.
Subject didactics: Subject didactics is an integral part of the work in the subject and shows how to organize learning in arts and crafts. The subject's relevance and legitimacy as a general education subject in school is an important part of this.
The subject presents a great variety in teaching, guidance and assessment forms that can equip the students to promote the students' creative and practical development in the subject which can contribute to mastery and joy. Own experiences from the creative process and theoretical and practical competence are important factors

Learning methods and activities
The study is harmonized with the working methods in the current curriculum for primary school. Teaching is carried out practically and theoretically in varied learning environments. The students work individually and in groups. A significant amount of work is required through self-study where the students work on tasks in extension of self-selected problems. The study will consist of an alternation between one's own practical creative work, encounters with art and formal culture, theoretical studies and collaboration with the field of practice. Reflection on one's own work and that of others is central. The students will work on academic and current issues. Documentation of work processes must be done through analogue or digital logs. Excursions to exhibitions and collections in the local environment are an important part of the course.
Compulsory assignments
- Obligatory course work according to course description
Further on evaluation
Compulsory activities
- Practical aesthetic tasks within a given theme to be presented in the form of an individual exhibition and log.
- A group task that concerns didactic reflection linked to one of the practical tasks.
Compulsory attendance appears in the semester schedule.
In the event of absence from compulsory study participation, a compensatory work requirement may be given.
Evaluation
- Part 1: Practical exam in the form of an individual exhibition consisting of creative works and log from the areas of design and architecture.
- Part 2: Individual written digital school exam. 4 hours.
The exhibition will document the student's practical creative skills and reflections related to their own process and subject didactics. Grades will be deducted if not all assignments are submitted for exhibition. The students exhibit their work, sketches and attach their log.
