About the course

Course content

The course provides in-depth study in music-related work as a performer, teacher, and researcher. It covers performing, creative, and listening skills and activities in music and dance, and offers experience with a smaller, profession-oriented research and development project (R&D work) related to music. There will be a particular focus on the relevant age groups in school.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

Upon completion of the course, the candidate is expected to:

  • Have basic knowledge of research methods and ethics in research
  • Be familiar with various types of profession-oriented R&D work related to music
  • Have knowledge of music pedagogical practices in schools and society
  • Have knowledge of different musical genres and style ideals
  • Have knowledge of social and creative processes in dance

Skills:

Upon completion of the course, the candidate is expected to:

  • Be able to plan, lead, implement, and evaluate a range of approaches and methods to facilitate musical learning
  • Be able to perform a varied repertoire of music alone and in collaboration with others
  • Be able to use listening and ear-based skills in the analysis, creation, and performance of music
  • Be able to improvise, compose, and arrange music
  • Be able to create and perform dance in collaboration with others
  • Be able to initiate, conduct, present, and evaluate the qualities of R&D projects related to music
  • Be able to search for, find, and relate to relevant research

General skills:

Upon completion of the course, the candidate is expected to:

  • be able to participate in qualified discussions about profession-oriented R&D work and the significance of such work
  • have insight into artistic development work and scientific research
  • be able to contribute to professional change processes by emphasizing innovation, change, and flexibility in their own teaching role

Learning methods and activities

The teaching methods alternate between individual and group teaching, lectures, group work and practical music-making. The students will work practically and develop knowledge and skills in musicianship, dancing, ensemble playing, composition, arranging, musical understanding, leadership and communication. Students are to complete their own research and development projects under supervision.

The students can be assessed, required to take part in coursework and required to attend teaching related to interdisciplinary topics

Attendance for teaching activities that require collaboration:

All coursework is assessed as approved/not approved and must be approved to be eligible for the exam. Group presentations, R&D conferences, and individual tests require 100% approved attendance. All teaching related to other mandatory activities requires 80% approved attendance. In case of a high absence rate, compensatory work may be given.

Exam form and grading scale:

Part 1, pass/fail: Individual, written R&D assignment. An improved assignment can only be submitted for assessment once. It is possible to submit an improved assignment for assessment once (considered as the second exam attempt). For the third exam attempt, a completely new assignment must be submitted.

Part 2, pass/fail: Practical group exam.

Part 3, letter grade A-F: Portfolio with 3 contributions: 1 music didactic work, 1 transcription, 1 music product with a reflection text

Overall assessment is given as a letter grade.

Partial assessments can be retaken or improved individually. It is possible to appeal partial assessments in the course (does not apply to oral/practical exams). New/deferred exams will be conducted in accordance with the current study regulations at NTNU.

If the individual research and development assignment is not approved, you have opportunity to submit an improved assignment for assessment only once (counted as exam attempt number two). At the third exam attempt, a completely new assignment must be submitted.

Primary and Lower Secondary Teacher Education for Years 1-7 (MGLU1-7) - some programmes
