MGLU4220 - Subject, profession and knowledge development in physical education

Course content

The course will contribute to the student to use knowledge to the development of the subject and teacher professions of physical education. Based on research areas in physical education, the student will acquire knowledge in research methodology, theory and empirically that is relevant to the subject, the profession, and the master thesis. The students will, through synthesizing knowledge, be able to familiarize themselves with relevant issues and be able to discuss and formulate possible solutions related to these issues. Students will also put this knowledge against the current management documents related to physical education. The course will develop the students' science theoretical understanding of various research methods, as well as their theoretical basis for choosing different methods. The course deals with a practical approach to various research methods, with a particular spotlight on observation.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The student is expected by completed the course to:

  • have advanced knowledge of ethical aspects of research
  • have in-depth knowledge of the theoretical basis for science for various research methods
  • be able to apply knowledge about how digital technology can be used as a pedagogical tool in physical education.

Skills

The student is expected by completed the course to:

  • be able to shape, discuss and manufacture research issues and issues related to physical education as a subject and profession
  • be able to synthesize knowledge and see this in relation to current issues, and be able to discuss and formulate possible solutions related to these issues
  • be able to analyze and relate critically to synthesized knowledge against current management documents related to the physical education subject

General competence

The student is expected by completed the course to:

  • have integrated knowledge within physical education as a field of research in order to be able to formulate research questions
  • be able to apply different methods, with a special focus on observation, to create new knowledge about physical education as a subject and profession.

Learning methods and activities

Seminars, workshops, work in groups, individual work, lectures, exercises in observation

  • Obligatory course work according to course description

Further on evaluation

Mandatory work requirements: Up to five assignment. The work requirements can be individual and in groups, in the form of observation, participation in activity, written reports or professional texts in written or multimedia forms. All the mandatory assignments must be approved before one can present themselves to the exam.

Required previous knowledge

The student must have passed physical education 1 and carried out physical education 2 in order to start on topics in cycle 2. Passed is understood as the student has completed and passed the exam in the course. Carried out is understood that all compulsory work requirements in the course are approved, in other words, that the student is exam ready.
