Course content

This course consists of work on a master's thesis in music education including a creative practice. The master's thesis in music education with creative practice is independent, critical, ethical, methodical, informed and clearly articulated research, related to a topic relevant to music in an educational context. The master thesis consists of a creative practice and a written component which together explore the research question. The creative work can be presented as a digital, audio or audiovisual recording, an online format, as a live performance, workshop, event, community work, or other creative practice as agreed with the supervisor. The creative work and the written thesis are expected to be distinct yet interdependent, presenting an integrated approach to the research topic. The creative practice and the written component are distinct but mutually codependent parts of the approach to the research topic. Supervision is an important element in the work on the master's thesis, and supervision is a compulsory part of the course.

Learning methods and activities

Learning methods and activities

The learning methods consist of: Independent individual work under the supervision of a supervisor. Supervision can take place individually or in groups. Presentations of the master's project in process, including opposition from fellow students. All students must sign a written agreement that regulates the master's thesis process. The agreement confirms that a supervision relationship has been established, that the topic has been approved by the supervisor and that the parts (student, supervisor and department) know, understand and have accepted the regulations specified in the agreement. Organization of collaboration with and research at institutions that are relevant to their own master's project must be arranged by the students themselves.

Compulsory activities

There are three compulsory activities in this course. These compulsory activities must be approved in order to submit the creative work and written thesis. They are as follows:

Mandatory activity 1: Supervision

Compulsory activity 2: Participation in a mid-term seminar, sharing the ongoing work and progress with other students and supervisors.

Compulsory activity 3: Participation in a final process seminar. Verbal presentation of the master's project in process including opposition to fellow students' master's projects in process.

All compulsory activities will be assigned approved / not approved and must be approved before you submit the complete master including creative practice and written thesis for assessment.

Participation in verbal presentations and supervision is necessary to pass the compulsory activities.

Specific conditions

Required previous knowledge

MGLU4219 and MGLU5235. All compulsory in these subjects must be approved in these subjects, however the examination must not be approved in order to start the work on the master thesis.
