Nomenclatur of organic molecules

Chemical bonding

Functional groups

Mechanism of reactions an stereoisomerism.

Amino acids, peptides and proteins - proteins three-dimensional structure and its functional role in the cells.

Enzymes, enzyme kinetics and regulation.The role of cofactors in enzyme.

Lipids and the general structure of the biological membrane. Membrane transport mechanism and their classification.

Carbohydrate

Carbohydrate metabolism and the energy generation.

Principles of bioenergetics.

Nitrogen metabolism.

Photosynthesis.

Nucleic Acids.

Genetic information: replication and transcription.

The genetic code and protein synthesis.

Objective:Give the students an introduction to the basic topics of biochemistry and organic chemistry. Properties and metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. Enzymology, bioenergetics, biosynthesis and basic molecular genetics. Nomenclature of organic elements, chemical bonding, isomerism and mechanisms of reactions.

Learning outcome

Læringsutbytte - Kunnskap:

The student will have knowledge about classification of major organic elements. This includes functional groups, isomerism, nomenclatur and mechanism of reactions.General kowledge about the structure of the major class of biomolecules in the cells and their biochemical reactions. Different biochemical patways are current items. Overview of the energy generation process from oxidation of carbohydrate and saturated fattacids is expected knowledge. Understanding genetic information proccessing ; replication and transfer of genetic information is expected knowledge.

Pedagogiske metoder:

Lectures, compulsory laboratory course and exercises. 

Obligatoriske arbeidskrav:

All compulsory laboratoryjournals, exercises and participation on cumpulsory workshop at the begining of the semester must be completed and approved before the examination. It is 6 compulsory exercises and 6 compulsory laboratory journales in the course.
