Reliability-Based Design and Operation of Marine Machinery
About
About the course
Course content
An introduction to reliability-based design and operation of mechanical systems in marine and offshore applications.
The following topics are covered:
- Dynamic load and response analysis of mechanical systems under variable loads
- Dynamic modelling of mechanical systems
- Stochastic analysis of load effects in rotating machinery
- Using structural reliability in machine design
- Design of mechanical components based on first principle
- Using reliability-based approach in operational phase for inspection planning and maintenance
- Using stochastic approach in fault detection of mechanical systems
- Introduction on digital twin and model-based monitoring methods
Learning outcome
After completing this course the students should be able to:
- Establish a dynamic model of a mechanical system
- Employ stochastic methods to analysis load and load effects in mechanical systems in marine and offshore applications, especially rotating machinery
- Familiar with reliability analysis methods
- Use structural reliability methods to design mechanical components
- Use stochastic approach for fault detection in mechanical systems
- Employ model-based and digital twin methods in condition monitoring and fault detection
Learning methods and activities
Mandatory exercises and a small project work. Minimum three students must register if the course is to be taught. To pass the course a score of at least 70 percent is required.
Compulsory assignments
- Øvinger
Further on evaluation
For a re-take of an examination, all assessments during the course must be re-taken.
If there is a re-sit exam, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
Recommended previous knowledge
It is an advantage to have studied elementary courses in machine design, dynamics and stochastic analysis.
