Course content
The course comprises work on the student's development of their principal instrument/vocals, including technique, methods, genre knowledge, theory and communication tied to a chosen repertoire, as well as broader general technical exercises. The course further includes methods and exercises for open-genre improvisation with vocals and/or instrument, both alone and as part of a group.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV1019
- has basic vocal/instrumental proficiency
- is broadly oriented within his or her main musical area/genre
- has basic practical and theoretical insight in appropriate techniques for listening, exercise and performance, both alone and in ensembles
- has basic knowledge of different types of appropriate methods for vocal/instrumental improvisation, independent of genre
Skills:
An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV1019
- can rehearse and present a vocal/instrumental repertoire from a broad field within his or her main musical area/genre
- can show musicality, technical skills, knowledge of styles and insight into music theory
- can improvise on a basic level both alone and with others
Learning methods and activities
Principal instrument: individual instruction with satisfactory participation in compulsory instruction. To be able to take the final exam, the student must attend a minimum of 80% of the lectures.
Instruction on the principal instrument is only given once to each individual student.
Improvisation: individual instruction with satisfactory participation in compulsory instruction. To be able to take the final exam, the student must attend a minimum of 80% of the lectures.

Further on evaluation
The course concludes with a practical examination on the principal instrument. The duration of the practical examination is approximately 10 minutes. If the student fails to attend principal instrument lectures after the department's appointment of a principal instrument teacher, the student will lose the right to take the final examination.
If the course is not passed, the student must retake the full assessment.
