Course content
The course is based on MUSV1021 Principal Instrument 2 and MUSV1018 Aural Training and Improvisation, and further develops a higher level on the student's principal instrument and aural skills.
The principal instrument instruction continues to develop the students principal instrument/vocal skills, including technique, methods, genre knowledge, theory and communication tied to a chosen repertoire, as well as broader general technical exercises.
The aural training develops the student's ability to define structures in music, translating them from sounding expressions to notation or vice versa.

Knowledge:
An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV2023 has deepened knowledge of
- vocal/instrumental directions and styles within his or her main musical area/genre
- instrumental, rehearsal and practice techniques and ways of conveying music alone and in ensembles
- principles of melody, rhythm, harmony and form
- music theory
Skills:
An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV2023
- can work in a goal-oriented and independent fashion
- can rehearse and present a vocal/instrumental repertoire from a broad field within his or her genre, at a higher level than what is required in MUSV1021
- can show musicality, technical skills, knowledge of styles and insight into music theory in practical performance at a higher level than what is required in MUSV1021
- can show musicality, technical skill and music theoretic insight in practical performance at a higher level than what is required in MUSV1018
Learning methods and activities
Principal instrument: individual instruction with satisfactory participation in compulsory instruction. To be able to take the final exam, the student must attend a minimum of 80% of the lectures.
Students with a need for piano accompaniment who have classical vocals, strings, brass or woodwind as their principal instrument, will get 4 x 30 min. accompaniment in preparation for their exam, and 1 hour for the exam itself.
Instruction on the principal instrument is only given once to each individual student.
Aural training: group instruction. In order to take the final exam, satisfactory participation in compulsory instruction including a final test and delivery of exercises is required. To pass the course, the student must attend a minimum of 80% of all group instruction.

Further on evaluation
The course concludes with a practical examination on the principal instrument. The duration of the practical examination is approximately 20 minutes. The repertoire must differ from previous exam/exams in Principal Instrument. If the student fails to attend principal instrument lectures after the department's appointment of a principal instrument teacher, the student will lose the right to take the final examination.
Getting a "not approved" in one of the compulsory components means that the student must retake that particular component. This will have to be approved in order to take the final examination.
If the course is not passed, the student must retake the whole assessment.

Required previous knowledge
Admission to the Bachelor's programme in Musicology and having passed MUSV1021 and MUSV1018.
