Course content
NORD1001 Introduction to Scandinavian language and linguistics introduces the students to central issues in Scandinavian studies and gives them basic knowledge that prepares them for further studies. On the one hand, the course offers an overview over Scandinavian language and literature as an academic field, its place in society and the relationship to Norwegian as a school subject; on the other hand, it gives the students some basic knowledge and profiencies that are required by all students of Scandinavian studies.

- have knowledge of the history of studies in language and literature and their basic terminology
- understands important terms and concepts and can use them in their own writing
- have basic skills in academic writing and use of references
Learning methods and activities
The course consists of lectures and groups/seminars. The groups/seminars are hands-on workshops. Over the course of the semester, students will have to complete written assignments presented by the lecturers.
Approved obligatory assignment is valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).
Compulsory assignments: Approved written and/or oral assignment(s) and/or test(s).
Exam and all compulsory assignments for NORD1001 must be written in bokmål.

Assessment: Multiple choice test (2 hours, no supporting material) and a written home examination (approximately 2000 words, 3 days). The multiple choice test counts 40% of the grade and the home examination 60%. The two exams are graded together and students recieve one grade, but both parts must be passed independently to pass the course. Students who fail must take both exams again.
Course materials
A reading list for the course will be available on the first day of class. The students will read a selection of texts on the history of Scandinavian studies, language and literature as objects of knowledge, and the role of Scandinavian studies in society (e.g. as a school subject).
