About the course
Course content
In this course the students will learn about writing and writing processes, and they will write their own texts - both scholarly and creative ones. As part of this work the students will participate in writing groups where they share and respond to each other's texts. Thus, the course gives both theoretical and practical experiences with developing texts and working with writing processes.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
After completed course the candidate will:
- have knowledge about creative and scholarly writing processes
- be familiar with various forms of textual response
- have comprehensive knowledge of various creative and academic genres
Skills
After completed course the candidate will:
- master creative and scholarly writing in various genres
- understand and perform textual response work in writing groups
- be able to use peer response in developing own writing
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and seminars as well as participating in writing groups. In the writing groups students will develop the texts that will make up the final portfolio, consisting of two assignments - one scholarly and one creative text.
Obligatory assignments:
- Two individual written assignments
- One group report from the writing group to the teacher.
- Participation in writing group between lectures.
Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given and the following semester).

The portfolio assessment is composed of two texts:
- Academic text (3000-4000 words)
- Creative text (1-2 texts, in total 1500-2000 words)
It is not possible for students who have passed the exam in NORD2220 to retake the exam in a semester where this course is not taught. Students who did not pass the exam, or who did not complete the exam due to documented illness may submit the final portfolio assessment in a semester where this course is not taught; however, they will not receive any supervision. All obligatory assignments must have been completed and approved the semester the course was taught.
Recommended previous knowledge
Basic level courses in Scandinavian studies of 45-60 ECTS, or equivalent.
