About the course

Course content

The course gives an introduction to the function of media in society, and discusses the place of children and the young people in the intersection between media culture, school culture and youth culture. In addition, the course presents didactic approaches to problems related to the teaching of media in schools. The extensiveness, application, modes of expression, content and influences of the media will be analyzed. In addition, focus will be put on how teaching and contemporary media pedagogical thinking can make use of young people's media competence.

Learning outcome

The students shall have thorough knowledge on and theoretical insight into:

  • Function, contents and forms in media society for children and young people.
  • Media experience and media use among children and the young people.
  • Interaction between media culture, school culture and youth culture in the socialization perspective.
  • Perspectives on media competence and media literacy.
  • Didactic approaches related to media teaching in school.
  • Theoretical and methodological issues in media education .

Learning methods and activities

Up to 3 hours teaching per week. More information about the obligatory assignments will be given at the beginning of the semester.

  • Portfolio assignment and peer assessment

Examination requires approved compulsory activity. It is only possible to carry out compulsory activity in the teaching semester (spring).
