About the course

Course content

The course focus on autoethnographic methodology and as a method. Autoethnography will be the subject of a thorough presentation and will be discussed in relation to other qualitative research methodologies, and in relation to ontological, epistemological, theoretical, political and methodological issues. The discussions will focus on important considerations around subjectivity, "voice" in qualitative research, writing, as well as evaluating and disseminating autoethnographic projects. Following a presentation of ethical considerations, the course will be rounded off with a focus on the participants' possible use of autoethnography in their own practice.

- Are able to evaluate the appropriateness and application of autoethnography as a method for developing knowledge within different practices
- Can contribute to the development of new knowledge based in autoethnographic approach.

- Can formulate research questions and carry out research projects with an autoethnographic approach
- Has in-depth knowledge of underlying philosophical, theoretical, political and methodological assumptions in autoethnography
- Can consider how own professional and personal experiences and "epiphanies" can be used as a basis for writing autoethnographic, either alone or in collaboration with others.
- Can identify and reflect on ethical issues related to autoethnographic methodology and dissemination thereof, along with ways of dealing with these issues


General competence
The candidate ...
- Has advanced knowledge of underlying philosophical, theoretical, political and methodological assumptions in autoethnography
- Can take a critical position on understanding the "neutral voice" in research and challenge established practice in qualitative research
- Can disseminate autoethnographic work and assess possibilities and limitations of the approach

Learning methods and activities

Dialogue-based teaching and group activities.
Reflection essay: All participants are encouraged to submit a short reflection essay (max 2 pages) prior to the course reflecting on the following: What is your interest in autoethnography? Why do you want to attend the course? How do you think autoethnography is relevant to you and / or your work? What are your hopes and desires for the course?

Further on evaluation

Participation in the course and submission of a short reflection essay prior to the course. It is expected that all participants have read the syllabus before the start of the course. Furthermore, active participation in discussions and group activities is expected. Write a paper: 10-15 pages to be delivered afterwards.
